"IN
THE SHADOW OF LEONARDO" Accademia di Brera Milano Until 23th of november 2003 |
|
| The twenty
years that Leonardo da Vinci passed in Milan, from 1482, at the court of
Ludovico il Moro, left an enduring footprint in the Lombard
culture. So much so that also afterwards several artists will continue to be inspired to him. The exhibition "In the shadow of Leonardo" proposes a current of this inspirations. It will be opened today at the "Accademia di Brera" where it will remain until 23th november 2003. It is one of the periodic exhibition with which Brera will put in a particular light its not much knowed works, because they are kept in the deposits, and also the works borrowed from somebody. In this occasion will be exhibited two paintings ispired to the famous "Vergine delle roccie", by Leonardo, that is kept at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The two paintings are "La Vergine col Bambino e i Santi Pietro e Paolo" that belongs to Brera but it came from the destroyed Milanese church of Sant'Andrea alla Pusterla, and an other painting similar to the Madonna con il Bambino, where there is the Virgin Mary with the child flenked by Sant'Antonio da Padova and Sant'Antonio Abate. The two clients, Ercole e Girolamo Visconti are kneeled in front. This painting in particular, knowed as "Pala di Besnate" a place in the district of Varese, is kept in the Church of San Martino. There is a stone rich of vegetation in the background, that is inspired to the natural scene-painting of Leonardo in the famous "Vergine delle Roccie". The painter of these two works is unknown but this is a very common fact in the old history of art. Certainly his cleverness is undiscussed, that is testified from the social level of his clients. For this reason he was designed as "Maestro di Ercole e Girolamo Visconti". The two Visconti were feudatories of Besnate. Also Gian Giacomo Rainoldi was a very important character for the policy during the Spanish domination. He commissions the ancona for the church of Sant'Andrea della Pusterla and the author, an anonymous "Maestro" who operates between 1520 and 1530, was a protagonist of the late current of the Lombard mouvement about Leonardo. Some of its followers were Boltraffio, Marco D'Oggiono, Cesare da Sesto, Andrea Solario and Bernardino Luin, but also Francesco Melzi, Cesare Magni and the Giampietrino .. |

Leonardo
da Vinci (1452 - 1519) From inspiration to innovation British Library's St Pancras building From 4 September 2003 to 5 January 2004 |
|
| Everyone has
heard of the Mona Lisa, but less well-known than Leonardo's painting are
his notebooks. They show that he was a designer and scientist
way beyond his time. He drew his visions of the aeroplane, the helicopter,
the parachute, the submarine and the car. It was more than 300 years
before many of his ideas were improved upon. The notebooks are where Leonardo recorded his own ideas as well as existing designs and philosophies for reference. They were never intended for publication. After his death in France on 2 May 1519, Francesco Melzi, his pupil, brought many of his manuscripts and drawings back to Italy. Melzi's heirs, who had no idea of the importance of the manuscripts, gradually disposed of them. The British Library holds one of his notebooks, the Codex Arundel. From 4 September 2003 to 5 January 2004 visitors to the British Library's St Pancras building were able to see three full-size models made for the BBC One series Leonardo .. >>> |

The Divine and the Grotesque | |
| The Divine
and the Grotesque is on display until November 9, 2003 at Buckingham
Palace in London. This exhibition is the first to focus on the artist's life-long obsession with the human form. All the works in the exhibition come from the Royal Collection, which holds the world's finest group of Leonardo's drawings. Through his drawings and notes, Leonardo attempted to define perfect or 'divine' proportion. At the same time, he delighted in distorting the human face to explore the comic potential of the 'grotesque'. This ground-breaking exhibition looks at Leonardo's work in the context of contemporary ideas of beauty, notions of perfection and popular imagery .. >>> |

- Castel Sismondo, 28 February to 22 June 2003 Leonardo’s presence in Romagna as architect and engineer general coincided with that of two other extremely important figures in the tumultuous history of early sixteenth century Italy: Cesare Borgia and his ambitious political/military dream and Niccolò Machiavelli, witness to the fickle fortunes of the Romagna dukedom as ambassador of the Florentine Republic. This exhibition, organised by the Associazione Culturale Erasmo and the City Museum is dedicated to these three extraordinary individuals and to the reconstruction of their epoch using documents and material which have survived to the present day: above all Codex L, whose relationship with Leonardo’s other works is analysed, as well as letters sent by Machiavelli to the Florentine magistrates, paintings, sculptures, objects and reconstructions of mechanisms, arms and armour .. >>> |
